Polymer compounding is defined as the process of upgrading polymers or polymer systems by melt mixing. Hollow seat compounding processes range from the addition of a single additive to multiple additive treatments, polymer alloys and reactive mixing. It is estimated that one-third of polymer production in blow molding in the United States is compounded. Compounds can be tailored to the functional requirements of the application. Compounded products have hybrid functions such as high gloss and excellent impact strength, eva foamed products or fine moldability and outstanding stiffness.

Compounded polymers are usually pelletized for further processing. However, there is growing industry interest in combining compounding with further processes, such as profile extrusion, which prevents reheating of the polymer.


Various types of melt mixing equipment are used, from roll mills and batch mixers to single- and twin-screw extruders. Continuous compounding (extruder) is the more commonly used equipment because it provides consistent quality products and reduces operating costs. There are two types of blending: Distributed blending where the product is evenly distributed without the use of high shear stress in the compounding process. Such mixtures are called extensional mixing or laminar mixing.


Dispersive mixing Also known as intensive mixing, where high shear stress is applied to break up cohesive solids. For example, when the additive mass is broken up, the practical particle size becomes smaller.


Mixing operations often require two mix types in one process.
